The Charles River Dam is a flood control structure. There is a walkway for pedestrians and cyclists, so they can avoid to use the Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge.

An exciting alternative to the bridge. The paths are quite narrow, so you should be careful with oncoming traffic. There is also a nice view of the bridges.

Hiking
If you don't want to use the bridge to cross the water, you can also walk over the lock. It doesn't seem to be used much and as long as the gates are closed, you can quickly get to the other bank.
