A motte can be found in the Oeverlanden Hollands Diep. Clearly visible from the Buitendijk in Strijensas, but it is more fun up close.

A motte-and-bailey castle is a high medieval castle type that was usually built of wood. Its main feature was that it stood on a motte, an artificial earthen mound. The motte-and-bailey castle itself often consisted of a tower-shaped building. Today, often only the hill remains. A motte is a partially or completely artificial hill with a regular shape and steep sides. The hill was usually surrounded by walls or palisades and wide dry or wet moats. The purpose of the construction is to better defend the fortifications on its flattened top and to control the environment. This upper court was usually adjoined by a lower court where actual life took place.
