Two old city gates form the entrance to the historic city center, the Benschopperpoort and the IJsselpoort. In the past, it was mainly farmers who entered the city through the Benschopperpoort and there was a separate entrance for important people. The Benschopperpoort was the gate to the outskirts of the Lopikerwaard, you were immediately in the farmland. Meadow as far as you could see, with the villages of Benschop and Lopikerkapel in the distance. There was a small lock in front of the gate, where ships could also moor. Boats could pass through the city canal to the Hollandse IJssel via the lock. The Benschopperpoort also had an important function for the markets in IJsselstein.
