In 1830, Chazal played an active role in the Belgian Revolt by organizing an improvised vigilante group. During the Provisional Government, Chazal was busy clearing Dutch resistance and also laid the foundation stone for a Belgian army. He was not naturalized as a Belgian until June 9, 1844, and on May 5, 1846 he became wing adjutant to Leopold I, who subsequently appointed him lieutenant general on August 11, 1847 and minister of war a day later.
In 1857 he was included in the Belgian hereditary nobility, with a baronial title for him and his sons. They were the last name bearers Chazal.
In 1865, after a parliamentary conflict over the uprising in Mexico with the Antwerp representative Delaet, a duel occurred in which he was injured. The court intervenes and imposes a prison sentence and fine. The king refuses his resignation and the injured minister retires in France. Meanwhile, his son Ernest had been killed in Mexico.
There was no final cure and on November 12, 1866, Chazal was relieved of his duties and appointed minister of state.
During the Franco-Prussian War he commanded the Observation Army that had to watch over the south and east of the country. After Napoleon III surrendered in Sedan, he accompanied him from the Belgian border to his captivity in Wilhelmshöhe via Verviers.
In 1875 he retired to his castle Uzos in Pau, where he wrote his memoirs.
On May 24, 1874, he transferred to the reserve cadre and withdrew to France for health reasons.
Chazal died in Uzos on January 25, 1892. His wife died that same day.
