For me, Nordkirchen Castle is by far the most beautiful in Münsterland, and the expansive park is also a great place to relax and enjoy. Breathtaking.

Nordkirchen Castle, often referred to as the "Westphalian Versailles", is an impressive baroque castle complex in Nordkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex was built between 1703 and 1734 by the architects Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius and Johann Conrad Schlaun and is the largest moated castle in Westphalia. It stands on an island surrounded by a wide, canal-like moat. The castle and its extensive park are known for their pronounced symmetries and rich furnishings with statues and sculptures.

The castle complex itself is in the French classicist style and impresses with a strictly symmetrical arrangement of the building sections that enclose a courtyard of honor. Particularly noteworthy is the chapel, which is located in one of the lower wing buildings. The front garden of the castle leads to a landscaped park that covers around 170 hectares and is entered through a formal parterre with elaborate broderie patterns.

The castle garden is part of the European garden network and is one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe. It is open to the public all year round and offers visitors insights into the history and special features of the complex through guided tours.

Nordkirchen Castle has also gained cultural significance in popular culture, for example as a filming location for the 2021 film "Spencer", where it served as the backdrop for the English Sandringham Castle.

A monumental site, this little Versailles with its parks is a must-see.
