Settlers John Keery (b. 1860, Northern Ireland) and Emily Collishaw (b. 1874, Middlesex, Ontario) married in 1891 and farmed 30 acres of land at 168 Street and 40 Avenue. The historic Collishaw House and Farm still stand west of this location. The Keery family sold produce in New Westminster and raised horses and pigs for local farms. They had three children: Leslie, Robert and Rita. John Keery served on municipal council for 20 years between 1894 and 1928, as school trustee in 1906, and as construction foreman to build the Pacific Highway. Emily was active in the community and sat on the board of the Surrey Women's Institute.
In 1914, the Keery family acquired this parkland from the Surrey School District in exchange for land near 168 Street and 32 Avenue where the Kensington Prairie School still stands, now Kensington Prairie Community Centre. This park recognizes the Keery family's contribution to community development. The Keery family still lives in the area today.
