Embark on the Battle Ax Mountain and Whetstone Mountain Loop, a difficult hiking route that challenges you with 5114 feet (1559 metres) of elevation gain over 19.4 miles (31.2 km). This demanding journey, estimated to take 10 hours and 31 minutes, leads you through old-growth forests and past Silver King Lake. You will find rewarding panoramic views from the summit of Battle Ax Mountain, where you can spot distant Cascade volcanoes like Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. Expect a true test of endurance as you navigate varied terrain.
Before you head out, be aware that the access roads to the trailhead are rough and rocky, often requiring a vehicle with good clearance. Sections of the trail, particularly around Whetstone Mountain, were affected by recent wildfires, so you might encounter downed trees and brush that make navigation more challenging. Always check current trail conditions before starting your hike to ensure a safe and prepared experience.
This loop takes you through the Opal Creek Wilderness, an area known for its diverse landscapes. While some parts show signs of past wildfires, other sections still boast vibrant rhododendrons and wildflowers, adding splashes of color to your journey. The route offers a unique opportunity to experience both the resilience of nature and the expansive beauty of the Pacific Northwest mountains.
