Is it worth it just for the highlight? Tar makes the road easier, but a lot of nature has been destroyed in recent years. The road isn't just being paved, it's also being widened. It's barbarically wide in places. As of February 2025, down by the Rio Queulat, parts of it are paved in one direction, especially upstream. The road up the mountain to the south is paved. The road down the mountain to the south is paved. This stretch used to be beautiful; the iconic images of the "Carreterra Austral" come from here, but now it's boring and just plain broken.
