    Rheingau Cathedral (1894) - Geisenheim 🚴‍♂️

Rheingau Cathedral is the name given to the Catholic parish church of the Holy Cross in Geisenheim in the Rheingau region. The late Gothic hall church was largely built between 1510 and 1518, under the Mainz cathedral master builder "Hattstein," as a successor to a Romanesque church first mentioned in 1146. After the western towers, dating back to the Romanesque period, were demolished in 1829 due to dilapidation, the Geisenheim-born master builder Philipp Hoffmann undertook a Neo-Gothic reconstruction from 1834 to 1838. In addition to the construction of the now 46-meter-high towers, the vaulting of the nave was altered. The building was given the name "cathedral" due to its size and importance compared to other churches in the region. It was never the seat of a bishop. The reticulated vault of the choir and the so-called Epiphany Altar are still preserved from the late Gothic period. The neo-Gothic high altar was added in 1886. The organ was built by the Stumm brothers in 1842. Friedrich von Stockheim (1462–1528) and his wife are buried in the Rheingau Cathedral. 🚴‍♂️
