Sequoia Avenue (Schwendenholzweg, Üetliberg)

Beautiful sequoia tree avenue on the way to Üetliberg. The smell of the trees and the view of the sky above them is really relaxing

Storm “Lothar” once swept through here at over 240 kilometers per hour and tore down countless trees. That was in 1999 and part of the Üetliberg was a single field of rubble after that. Things looked particularly bad along the 750 meter long Schwendenholzweg between Hohenstein and Ringlikon. He became treeless overnight.
But Zurich’s local mountain should not remain “dead”. At least not for long. A replacement had to be found. This was found in sequoia trees, known to many from the USA - for example between Los Angeles (California) and Seattle (Washington). The giants are called “Sequiadendron giganteum”. They have long been cultivated in local tree nurseries.
