From the 1860s onwards, the imperial-royal Franz Josef Railway was considered a connection between Vienna and the Czech town of Eger. Today it runs 43 kilometers from Vienna via Klosterneuburg, St. Andrä-Wördern and Tulln to Absdorf-Hippersdorf - and on to Gmünd and across the Czech state border to České Velenice, where Gmünd's main train station used to be.
The Franz Josef Railway takes its passengers comfortably from the city of Vienna through the Lower Austrian Weinviertel and Waldviertel. Regional trains run on the route to Sigmundsherberg, Gmünd/České Velenice, St. Pölten and Krems.
