The Big South Trail and Trailhead is located just off the Poudre Canyon Highway on multi-use US Forest Service Land. There is parking and a near by campground (where there is a bathroom available) just to the south of the trailhead. Once departing the trailhead, after just a half-mile of hiking on the Big South Trail, you enter the Comanche Peak Wilderness area. From here you are treated to a backcountry experience of hiking a gently slopping, but narrow, sometimes rocky and rooted trail along the roaring Cache La Poudre River through the forest. There are several backcountry campsites along the Big South Trail. This is an extremely popular trail with anglers in the summer and fall when the water levels are lower than their springtime peak. The trail ends just past the intersection with the Flowers Trail because a bridge that once crossed the Cache La Poudre washed away.
