"Why was the Oberkochen parish so late?" I was asked these days. This question seems to me particularly interesting in this context and worthy of careful consideration, because 1343 is in fact very late considering that in our area at least since the eighth century (Ellwangen 764, Unterkochen vor! Christian life and ecclesiastical structures existed and that in the thirteenth century a considerable church in Romanesque style was built in Oberkochen, as the foundation and ground floor of our present church tower indicate.

St. Peter and Paul is the Roman Catholic parish church of Oberkochen. The three-aisled neo-Romanesque basilica, consecrated in 1900, stands on the foundations of a previous Romanesque church that was built at the latest in the early 13th century and was dedicated to the apostle Peter.
