Monterotondo Marittimo is located in the heart of the Colline Metallfere, Alta Maremma, on the border with the province of Pisa. It can be reached from both the north and the south along the SR439.
The name of the town derives from Mons Ritundus, due to the particular almost conical shape of the hill on which the town stands. The specification Marittimo is linked to its position in the hinterland of the coastal area and links it even more to nearby Massa, also Marittima. As a triple border area (Massa Marittima, Siena, Pisa) rich in deposits (copper, silver, see also the nearby mining castles of Rocchette Pannocchieschi and Cugnano) Monterotondo was often at the center of political and economic conflicts. Siena's interest in mineral deposits, the birth of the free municipality of Massa Marittima, the interference of Pisa, the imperial seat, often clashed with the village's desire for autonomy. Its political role, as the headquarters of the territory, has always fueled this desire.
