A fish ladder or fish pass (also Fischwanderhilfe or organisms ascent, in Germany officially also fish way called) is a hydraulic engineering device at running waters, in order to give fish in the context of the fish migration the possibility to overcome weirs, water power plants and possibly also waterfalls. All running-water organisms depend on the navigability of the waters. Fish migration aids allow fish and small animals of the river bottom (macrozoobenthos) to overcome structural obstacles.
