The Vils rises in the Vilsalpsee, above the Tannheimertal, a nature reserve formed by glaciers. It leaves the lake as a small stream, flows through Tannheim, then west, makes a large curve down to Pfronten in the Allgäu and from there it meanders further east past the town of Vils, where it finally flows into the Lech.
