The Tower of Charles V was built in 1554 to defend the most important charger on the island; the massive structure, with a truncated pyramid shape, is dominated by the so-called "gunboat terrace". The dimensions and defenses of the fortification still give an idea of the importance of the loader in the economy of the time. The tower was used as a prison for a long time: in 1848 it was the scene of the massacre of 114 prisoners.
