The five-meter-high cross was inaugurated on June 23, 2006, on the occasion of Austria's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. It consists of equal-sized cubes, each representing an EU member state. Each cube contains a stone typical of that country, symbolizing Europe's cultural diversity. For example, the cube for Germany contains a piece of the Berlin Wall, while the one for Austria contains a stone from St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
