The history of Royal Delft, also known as Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, is closely intertwined with the rich tradition of Delft blue pottery in the Netherlands. It all started in the 17th century, when the craft of Delft blue pottery flourished in the city of Delft. Even then it was known for its distinctive blue decoration on white earthenware, which was inspired by the famous Chinese porcelain that had characterized Europe.
The Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles was founded in 1653 by David Anthoniszoon van der Pieth, a pharmacist in Delft. He decided to become a pottery producer and took the craft of Delft blue pottery to a new level of refinement and quality. The company quickly became one of the most common producers of Delft blue pottery in the Netherlands.
Over the years the company's name became "De Porceleyne Fles", and was later awarded the designation "Royal" (Royal) by King Willem III in 1876, in recognition of the high quality of their products. it is known as Royal Delft.
During the 19th century and early 20th century, Royal Delft employed some of the most talented artists and designers who contributed to the creation of unique and beautiful Delft Blue works of art. The company continued to manufacture pottery throughout this period, ranging from tableware and vases to tile paintings and decorative pieces.
During the Second World War, the Royal Delft factory was seriously damaged, but after the war a lot of work was done to rebuild and preserve the craftsmanship. Traditional production methods were kept alive, and Royal Delft continues to produce hand-painted Delft blue pottery to this day.
In 2018, Royal Delft opened its own museum. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions of both historical and contemporary Delft Blue artworks and learn about the powerful techniques required to create these beautiful pieces.
Royal Delft remains an important symbol of Dutch cultural heritage and continues the tradition of Delft blue pottery, combining ancient crafts with modern designs. The museum and factory attract visitors from all over the world who want to enjoy the beauty and history of this iconic pottery.
