Hamburg-Höltigbaum was a military training area with shooting ranges. In the last years of the Second World War, courts-martial from Military District X sentenced numerous soldiers to death and had them executed at the Höltigbaum firing range. The firing squads came from the surrounding barracks. In most cases the verdict was given for “desertion” or “destruction of military strength”. Especially in the last four months of the war, commandos carried out the death sentences here almost every morning. The last shootings are proven to have taken place on April 28, 1945, five days before the British troops arrived in Hamburg.
After the war, the Höltigbaum initially remained a military training area for the Bundeswehr. After the training area was abandoned, a plaque was placed here on September 5, 2003, commemorating the shootings. The table is part of the cultural authority’s so-called “table program”. The Rahlstedt peace initiative organized a small memorial: It is dedicated to the soldiers who refused further military service for the Nazi tyranny and were persecuted and killed for it. The fate of Wehrmacht deserters would remain in the background for a long time. At the beginning of the 1990s, the artist Andrea Peschel built a deserters' monument in Blankenese on a private initiative. However, this was dismantled in 2005. The plaque on the Höltigbaum alone commemorated Wehrmacht deserters for ten years. In November 2015, the memorial for deserters and other victims of the Nazi military justice system was finally opened at Stephansplatz/Dammtor.

Since then, a bilingual board from the “Memorial places for deserters and other victims of the Nazi military justice” program that complements the memorial has also provided information at the former Höltigbaum shooting range. A stumbling block in front of the black plaque on the Höltigbaum, laid in 2019, is dedicated to the soldier Herbert Klein (1922–1945).
