The church of Santa Maria di Cartignano is a religious building located near Bussi sul Tirino, in the province of Pescara.
Once a Benedictine monastery, under Montecassino first, and then San Liberatore a Majella, over the centuries it lost its original function because, already in a state of abandonment, it was repeatedly hit by flood phenomena.
From the end of the 19th century and for the following years, restoration works were carried out intermittently. It has been elected a national monument since 1902, after the last restoration in 1968 with which it was decided to keep the church in ruins, today it has been made safe and accessible.
The choice to preserve the monument as a ruin, and consequently the absence of the central roof, gives a strong evocative power to the façade and apse which remain standing, clearly visible to those traveling along the SS153 today.
