On June 8, 1979, a Bundeswehr helicopter of the type SE.3130 Alouette II was on the flight from the Putlos military training area via Celle-Wietzenbruch to Fritzlar. At around 2 p.m., turbine damage occurred at an altitude of around 100 meters, the helicopter crashed at Rothenstein, around 400 meters high, on the Ith airfield and exploded. The pilot, Oberfeldwebel Klaus Masson from the 12th Army Aviation Squadron in Niederstetten, and the commander of Panzergrenadierbataillon 352 based in Mellrichstadt, Lieutenant Colonel Ernst-August Rust, and a staff officer, Lieutenant Reinhold Drescher, all died. Since June 8, 1987, the victims have been commemorated by a memorial stone on the Ith, and the memorial was inaugurated on September 10, 1987. The former Panzer Artillery Battalion 15 in Stadtoldendorf assumed sponsorship and responsibility for the memorial.

On our 2nd Ith-Hils-Weg stage we passed here on the way to the Ithwiesen, or accidentally discovered the information sign. Very sad what happened here. 😕
