The Tauernbahn runs between Schwarzach-St. Veit in the province of Salzburg and Spittal-Millstättersee in Carinthia. It is part of one of the most important north-south main routes in Europe and also serves to develop the Gastein Valley for tourism.

You avoid the crossing of the main Alpine ridge, which is normally only possible by mountain bike, by taking the train through the Tauern Tunnel. This is the standard route for normal people.
