At the Minden waterway junction (on the northeastern edge of the city of Minden), the Mittelland Canal is led over the Weser in almost 400 meter long trough bridges. The canal level is about 13 meters above that of the Weser. This saves the canal the descent and ascent to/from the Weser Valley floor. The waterway junction is located within a 174 km lock-free section of the canal. The canal is connected to the Weser via two short connecting canals with locks (including the economy locks Schachtschleuse Minden and Weserschleuse Minden). The Mittelland Canal / Elbe Lateral Canal Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for the Mittelland Canal, Weser and the two connecting canals.
