    Hiking

If you're heading further out on the trail you'll be on the pedestrian only section of Hulls Gulch. Walking down towards town on Lowers Hulls Gulch will have you sharing the trail with bikers. Both options are great, you just need to be aware of fast moving bikers on the lower section.

    550m

Embark on a difficult hiking adventure along the Hulls Gulch to Sunset Peak Road Trail, a challenging route spanning 11.5 miles (18.5 km). You will gain 1872 feet (571 metres) in elevation over an estimated 5 hours and 27 minutes of hiking. As you navigate the diverse terrain, expect a mix of singletrack paths and wider trails, with some sections becoming rocky and steep. The route offers expansive views of downtown Boise and the surrounding foothills, providing a scenic backdrop to your journey. Keep an eye out for the striking Red Cliffs, distinctive yellow and orange clay formations that add a unique visual element to the landscape.

When planning your visit, be prepared for desert conditions and always carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Depending on the time of year, particularly in the upper sections, you might encounter muddy areas or patches of snow. Be aware that the road leading to some trailheads can be rough; past the 8th Street Trailhead, you might need a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle to access certain starting points.

This robust hiking experience is nestled within the Hulls Gulch Reserve, offering a true immersion into the Boise Foothills. The trail's varied landscape, from its challenging ascents to its unique geological features like the Red Cliffs, makes it a notable option for experienced hikers seeking a substantial outing. You might even spot a seasonal creek or a small waterfall along certain parts of the trail, adding to the natural charm of the area.
