The victorious battle of Kodeń, January 22-23, 1863.

Against the backdrop of numerous battles of the January Uprising of 1863, the Battle of Kodeń stood out in particular.

    Every building was fought over

The attack on the Russian army in Kodeń was exceptional. The atmosphere in the city was decidedly anti-Russian. On a January night, an insurgent unit gathered in the "Borek" forest near Kodnie. Officially, the leader of the party was to be Bolesław Grubecki, nominated by Roman Rogiński. In fact, the constructor of the Kodeń Victoria was Paweł Necki, a former tsarist officer. A unit composed of 250 people, mainly representatives of the backwater nobility from Tuczna, supported by the townspeople of Kodeń, successfully attacked the artillery park stationed in Kodeń and a small garrison, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Kazański. The Russians were stationed at three points. The first was in the city center in the place where the Pilgrim's House is now located. The second one near the bridge over the Kałamanka river. The third in the former Sapieha castle. So the battle stretched from the Market Square to the castle. The surprise of the Russians was huge. The insurgents, armed with scythes and several pistols, seized the city in a spectacular way. On the Russian side, 5 soldiers were killed, 15 were wounded, and 50 (some sources say 80) were taken prisoner. 50 rifles and ammunition and money, a total of 4,000, were captured. rubles. Then, Necki at the head of the unit went to Woskrzenice, placing himself under the orders of Rogiński.

In 1869 Kodeń lost its municipal rights under the tsar's decree and was demoted to the status of a settlement. However, the most powerful blow came in 1875. The Church of St. Anna was turned into an Orthodox church, and the image of the Mother of God was removed from the altar and transported to Jasna Góra. In the free homeland, the heroic January insurgents were not forgotten. In 1935, at the Roman-Catholic cemetery in Kodeń, six insurgents who died for the freedom of the nation were given a tombstone. In 2009, a large granite monument was erected. Every year on All Souls' Day there is an Appeal of the Fallen, numerous candles are lit. On the commemorative plaque there are very eloquent words spoken by the dictator of the uprising, a national hero, the son of General Romuald Traugutt, which should be a signpost for today's and future generations: (...) LOVE FOR THE HOMELAND AND MAKE THE GREATEST SACRIFICES FOR IT - THIS IS NOT CHOICE VERSUS DUTY INHERITED IN OUR FATHERS' DEAL.
