There was a stave church here from the 13th century.
Some of their boards were found under the floor of what is now the sacristy. In the 14th century the stave church was replaced by a half-timbered church that forms the choir and sacristy of the present church.
There have been many additions over the years; the last in the 1740s when the church took its cruciform shape.
