This neoclassical gazebo was built around 1868 on an artificially constructed hill, the so-called Drogenbroodberg, with earth from the digging of the ponds around the slightly earlier completed castle/country house of Jules Van Merris in Proven.
The workers are compensated, among other things, with dry bread, hence the name.
