The old hospital of the town, known as the maison du sel, is a historic building in Wissembourg, in the French department of Bas-Rhin. The building has been listed as a monument historique since 1998.It is a very iconic house of the town.Possibly built in 1448, as an inscription embedded in the façade suggests, the old hospital is particularly notable for its impressive roof area and its volumetry. It housed an immense infirmary with a height of more than 5 metres, whose monumental supports remain partially hidden. The building then served as a slaughterhouse and salt house until 1791. Major reconstructions were carried out in the 18th century, including the removal of the bell tower that housed the hospital bell.

La Maison du Sel is a remarkable ensemble with its four-storey roof. Originally a hospital, this building later served as a salt depot and then as a slaughterhouse.

Whether you go on foot or by bike... Wissembourg is definitely worth a visit. It is accordingly busy when the weather is good and on weekends. Careless people, mostly too small for their body weight, are wandering around everywhere, sweating. They also make a lot of noise. In the morning or during the week, however, you can enjoy the visit. Have fun!
