The marls shape the landscape into soft rock dunes with arid slopes. True witnesses of the Lower Cretaceous period (approximately -135 million years), these Valanginian marls are mostly composed of limestone, sand and clay, giving them this friable appearance when dry. Tinted with a gray or yellowish color, they bear witness to a time when the ocean covered the Baronnies provençales, which were only then an immense marine trench: the Vocontian basin.
