The church of Saint Théodule de thyez, one of the oldest in Haute-Savoie, is very beautiful and typical. It was restored decades ago.

It is located almost in the center of a Gallo-Roman resort. The apse of this church would be built on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the god Mars. Several stones in the building suggest this, one of which is visible from the outside.

The archives already speak of it in 1150. It was the church of the old Benedictine priory of Thyez. The surrounding communities used to gather in this place of prayer.

The bell tower has eight tuned bells, forming an octave of FA major: FA – SOL – LA – SI – DO – RE – MI - FA. The B flat bell dates from 1473, it is the oldest in Haute-Savoie. The SOL bell is the latest addition. It is dedicated to Saint Théodule and is called “La Tylonne”. It was cast on October 5, 2000, blessed on November 26, 2000 on the feast of Christ the King and put in place on November 28, 2000.

Its name comes from the Greek: Theou (God) and Doulos (Servant), that is to say: SERVANT OF GOD. He was the first Swiss bishop and more particularly of Valais. He lived in Octodure, the old Celtic name of what is now Martigny, which at the time was an important crossroads. It is he who is the initiator of the cult of Saint Maurice and his fellow martyrs. He had them build a first church near the current Abbey of Saint Maurice in Valais. He participated in the Council of Aquileia in 381, on the shores of the Adriatic, a city destroyed by Attila, and whose inhabitants founded Venice not far from there. The archives of this council bear his signature. His liturgical feast day is August 16.
