The foundation of this Renaissance building in the first half of the 16th century is due to the clavero of the Order of Calatrava Frey Fernando Fernández de Córdova y Mendoza, who reveals himself to us as one of the great patrons of this era.

This is reflected not only in the pious spirit of its foundations, but also in the common ideal of Renaissance men to achieve fame after death, through the work of art.

Frey Fernando decided to found, with his large assets, a convent in Almagro that would belong to the Order of Preachers of Santo Domingo under the dedication of Our Lady of the Rosary and a university to enlighten the people of this land.
