St. Mary's Church in Angermünde was completed around 1250 as the town's parish church and has largely been preserved in its original state. Since the northern part of Brandenburg (Uckermark and Prignitz) is "stone-rich", fieldstone (granite) was used as the material for the construction of the church, a building material that was locally plentiful. It was deposited here during the Ice Age. For the construction of the church, the granite was cut into regular blows of approximately the same size and laid in layers of the same height. Granite is a very durable and resilient material that was popular for the construction of fortified churches. What Martin Luther described with the hymn "The Strong Castle is our God" was also understood by the church and its tower. The Church of Angermünde was also built in this preferred building style in Romanesque style with a nave and chancel in the first half of the 13th century. About 100 years later, the building became Gothic: the vaults and larger windows still testify to this today.
