The ascent starts from Caporetto and going up the Isonzo - Soča valley floor up to Idrija it begins to climb in the direction of Livek and the Italian border. The first 4km of the climb are brutal, some hairpin bends break up the straights with an average gradient of 11%. This sector of the climb does not allow breathing space but once you arrive near the town of Livek and its plateau, the slopes soften and the landscape becomes completely alpine.
