The chapel of Our Lady of Rest was built to worship Mary after, according to tradition, a statuette of the Blessed Virgin washed ashore after a flood. It shows how important the Maas and (the fear of) floods have always been here.

The statue, which washed up on a gravel bank in an old Maasarm, was thus still the tradition, found by a girl and then the chapel was built.

In 1706, worship took off when the owner of the leased farm to which the chapel belonged sold everything to the Crosiers of Maaseik (where a Crosier monastery used to be).

More and more believers came and the chapel quickly became too small. Around 1768 a new and larger one was built.

The pastor of Heppeneert, a hamlet of neighboring Maaseik, who was also a Crosier, hid the statue when he noticed that it would be destroyed together with the chapel in Elen during the French Revolution. The intention was to bring it back later, but that didn't happen. Around 1883 the statue was placed in the church of Heppeneert, which has since become a place of pilgrimage.

Nevertheless, the worship in the chapel of Elen is continued and a mass is celebrated on August 15.

There is a replica of the statue in the open chapel where candles can also be burned.
