Catholic Church of St. Joseph, Alvaschein

The Church of St. Joseph was built from 1653 to 1655 as a branch church on the initiative of the Capuchins active in the Albula Valley at the time (shell construction) and consecrated on June 28, 1663 by Bishop Ulrich VI de Mont (1661-1692) in honor of St. Joseph and St. Anthony of Padua (Church Archive No. 3.1.1.). There was no previous church at this location, because the Church of St. Joseph replaced St. Peter in Mistail. The Blessed Sacrament was moved from St. Peter to the new parish church. In 1681, the bells from Mistail were also moved to the church tower of St. Joseph in Alvaschein. The separation from the mother parish of Tiefencastel is documented for the year 1738.

The Church of St. Joseph was changed several times. In 1740, the side chapel to the north was built and the altars were rebuilt. In 1790 and 1894, St. Joseph received new bells. In 1915, the church was renovated on the outside, and in 1918 the tower, built by Carlo Rufona, was built. The church was renovated in 1925. In 1939, four new bells were consecrated (Ruetschi AG Aarau). From 1971 to 1974, the church was extensively restored and then placed under the protection of the federal government and the canton. An interior restoration followed in 2012 and the tower was renovated in 2016.
