It is a municipality and, at the same time, an indigenous reservation of Colombia. It is located northeast of the department of Cauca, 80 kilometers from the city of Popayán (the capital of the department). It limits to the north with the municipalities of Caloto and Toribío, to the east with the municipality of Páez, to the south with the municipality of Silvia and to the west with the municipalities of Caldono and Santander de Quilichao. The municipal seat is the most populated urban center in the territory and is also called "Jambalo"; it is located in the extreme south, on the limits with the municipality of Silvia; however, the rural area is where most of the population lives (89.3%4).
As Jambaló is also an indigenous reservation, 97.7%4 of its inhabitants are from the Nasa and Misak ethnic groups, and at least a third of them speak the Nasa Yuwe and Namtrik languages. As an indigenous reservation, it was established in 1702 when the cacique Juan Tama de la Estrella defined the territory, that is, he established its geographical limits, after receiving the title from the viceroy of Quito. On Tuesday, July 12, 1904, under ordinance number 38 of the Government of Cauca, a municipality was erected.
