In the old town center of Spangenberg, surrounded by an almost complete historic half-timbered building, is the centrally located town hall with market square and Liebenbachbrunnen. The start of construction for the stone town hall was probably in the 14th, at the latest at the beginning of the 15th century. Two conversions in 1820 and 1881 gave the three-storey building with a large pitched roof and ridge turret its current appearance. The pillory stones decorated with grimaces are still reminiscent of the medieval legal system. Small offenses (insults, defamation, disputes, etc.) were judged in the pillory. Chained and with pillory stones around his neck, the condemned man was exposed to the mockery of the people for several hours. Source: Helmut Rahm - From the history of the town hall.
