William Wade Harris (1860-1929) was a Grebo evangelist from Liberia. His parents, of Grebo ethnicity and animist worship, sent him at the age of 16 to the Methodist Episcopalian school presided over by the Reverend Jesse Lavry. This takes him under his guardianship, baptizes him and teaches him to read and write in English and Grebo.

Around 1913-1914, Catholic missionaries denounced the prophet William Wadé Harris, presenting him as a charlatan who carried out a "Protestant plot" against the mission.

It was during his incarceration in 1912 for political reasons that William would have been visited by the angel Gabriel, asking him to evangelize his brothers. After his release, he emigrated to Côte d'Ivoire. Where he is also a prisoner in the prison of San-Pedro, his preaching had great success. He will be expelled to Liberia in April 1915 by the French governor of Côte d'Ivoire.

During three appearances during his incarceration in 1912, the angel told him that he was to be an end-time prophet. To do this, he would need to wear a white robe and ditch his civilized clothes including his patent leather shoes. he would also need to destroy the fetishes starting with his own and he had to preach Christian baptism.

In the original doctrine of Harris, the Bible, which he knew perfectly, played an essential role (abandonment of fetishes, obedience to the Mosaic law, obligation of baptism); the Old Testament was considered a mirror of Africa (tolerance towards polygamy, oral tradition, importance of divinatory dreams and spiritual healings). The faithful believed that through the intercession of Harris they would obtain as much wealth as the Europeans. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wade_Harris
