Running
Run to the ruins of a fort built by Henry VIII on Cap Gris-Nez, the closest point from France to England and dating back to the 16th century. It was part of a series of fortifications built by the English king to defend the coast against the French and Spanish. You can see the remains of the wall and the moat, and appreciate the view of the Strait of Dover and the White Cliffs of Dover.

The name comes from the old Flemish: Grisenesse which means "gray cape", -need from the old saxon naes meaning headland. Another name was Swartenesse "black cape". The proximity of the English coast and the Strait made the Cape a strategic place in the wars between Great Britain and France, which meant that the village of Audinghen was destroyed several times.
