The floating moor or Sehestedter Außendeichsmoor is a unique natural monument located on the Jade Bay in the municipality of Jade (Wesermarsch district) near the district of Sehestedt.[1] The moor is the only outer dike moor in the world and is now counted among the flooded moors. It has been part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park since 1986. It was previously a nature reserve as part of the "Jadebusen Bird Sanctuary" (WE 87).

Originally this moor was inland, separated from the sea by marshland . It developed from low moor to high moor. The underside of the peat moss was lower than the surface of the offshore coastal marsh, its surface higher. Before the sea dikes were built in the 12th century, however, storm surges could reach the moor. With the advance of the Jade Bay, the sea shore reached the bog. During storm surges, the moor and the houses built on it were lifted by the water. Sometimes large areas of moor were torn down and driven away, but were set down again a considerable distance away when the flood waters started. On the area of today's Jadebusen and the Lockfleth, which existed in the 14th and 15th centuries, large areas of moor were lost. The former moor areas were also referred to as Hoben , originally the Frisian word for floating moor. (Source Wikipedia)

Beautiful round with a fantastic view. Right on the water and at least in September you are almost alone

Only when extreme storm or hurricane tides reach more than 1.70 m above mean high tide in Sehestedt does the more than 3-meter-thick "moor island" begin to float. In the process, pieces break off, become deposited on the dike or in the salt marshes, or are washed away and ground down by subsequent floods. Thus, the moor gradually shrinks.
One of its special features is that two completely different ecosystems border each other here: the freshwater ecosystem of the moor and the saltwater system of the salt marshes and mudflats.

The moor is accessible via a 150-meter-long boardwalk in the southern part, but otherwise, due to its uniqueness and sensitivity, it is not accessible in order to preserve it for as long as possible.
