One stop on the 2012 CHURCH IN NEED pilgrimage to Slovenia and Croatia, which we organized with the Institute for Church History of Bohemia-Moravia-Silesia, was Zagreb. The sarcophagus containing the remains of Archbishop Aloisius Stepinac is buried in the cathedral of the Croatian capital. He was convicted as a war criminal and collaborator in a scandalous show trial in Zagreb in 1946. On February 10, 1960, he died with the words of his motto on his lips: “In Te, Domine, speravi. – In you, O Lord, I have placed my hope.”

Alojzije Viktor Cardinal Stepinac was a Roman Catholic theologian and cardinal and Archbishop of Zagreb from 1937 to 1960. Stepinac was beatified as a martyr in 1998 by Pope John Paul II.
