The Henneburg, which is now a ruin, was built as "Prozelten Castle" by the Schenken von Clingenburg. The mighty keep (12th century) is the oldest part, the eastern palace dates from the middle of the 13th century.
It was sold to the Counts of Hanau-Wertheim along with the town and the surrounding area in 1275. It later came to the Teutonic Order and in 1483 to the Archbishopric of Mainz. The castle was expanded into a fortress by the Teutonic Order, which had the western palace, the small keep, the ring wall with its towers and the underground battlement built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was given its current name Henneburg by one of its commanders.
The Henneburg is now considered one of the most beautiful castle ruins in Germany. We have King Ludwig I of Bavaria to thank for the fact that the complex is relatively well preserved today. He had security work carried out on the castle as early as the 19th century.
The entrance to Henneburg is directly in Stadtprozelten. There are a few parking spaces at the castle itself. You should allow yourself a little more time for a visit, because there is a lot to discover. Two towers can be climbed and offer a brilliant view of the surrounding area.

Henneburg is open to visitors at the following times:

    April - October: 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

    November - March: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Due to unforeseeable weather conditions (black ice, thunderstorms, rain, snow), short-term closures are to be expected. We ask for your understanding.

The opening times of the Henneburg tavern are Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer months (April to October).
