The border line between Italy and Switzerland, in the section that goes from Cima Garibaldi to Monte Dolènt, was revised during the years 1929-1938 by a joint Italian-Swiss commission. This section goes from Passo di Val Viola to Passo di Canciano, including 72 points of reference. Between one point of reference and another, square wooden "poles" with red and white stripes were placed (one is still clearly visible a little further on).

This border is very natural and surrounded by greenery, although there is an old border checkpoint nearby, as this area was once a popular route for smugglers.
