It is a small and pretty market located in the center of an arcaded square where there are different stalls, and where you can buy fresh fish and shellfish every day.
The history of this market begins after the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1836. The convent of San Agustín or Socors has been abandoned since then. Since the mid-19th century, on the west side of the convent, a street market has been built with various stalls selling fish, meat or sausages. As a consequence of the demolition of a part of the city walls during the second half of the 19th century, an important remodeling was carried out in this area. In what was formerly the orchard of the convent, a new square was set up with somewhat wider spaces between the narrow streets of the old town, with which, in 1895, the fish market was created, following the characteristic architecture of the late 19th century. with the use of wrought iron and ceramics and providing the building with windows in order to ventilate it. The building was designed by Ramón Cavaller, who also carried out the project for the nearby Des Born theater.
Just opposite and attached to the Socors convent, there are butcher stalls, covered with porches, and where you can buy typical Menorcan sausages and cheeses (it's worth it because the goods they sell are of quality). In the surroundings there are also several greengrocers and food stores and some bars and restaurants where you can eat or simply have tapas.
An ideal place to walk in the morning and enjoy the atmosphere of a local and traditional market where a wide variety of fresh and quality products are sold.
