The tower also serves as a lighthouse. The light of La Chaume was the only lighthouse on the Vendée coast until the end of the eighteenth century.
In 1858, the state bought the ruins and between 1986 and 1994 the restoration work on the lighthouse was carried out by the Ponts-et-Chaussées, giving the tower its current shape.
