Blacksmithing in the city probably only gained strength against the background of the decline in trade. The beginnings of the Friesoyther blacksmiths' guild are in the dark. The St. John's Guild mentioned in Friesoythe in 1535 was hardly an association of blacksmiths, as the patron saint of the guild was the Apostle Andreas. There is no doubt that the smiths' guild appeared at the end of 1599, when its statutes were first laid down in writing. At the time, however, the relevant provisions were already part of the well-praised tradition. In addition to the skill of the smiths, an important prerequisite for the flourishing of crafts in Friesoythe was that bog iron ore, an important raw material for production in the immediate vicinity of the city, could be extracted.
