The Schmersauer Feldsteinkirche is essentially a late Romanesque to early Gothic building. Today, this is almost only evident in the tower, whose high, pointed-arched window openings are framed with bricks that change in color. The weather vane from 1753 is a reminder of the von Bartensleben family's earlier church patronage.
The nave was heavily rebuilt in the 18th and especially in the 19th century. – As early as 1820, the originally retracted choir was raised and expanded to the width of the nave. The triumphal arch was also removed. During the general renovation in 1873, among other things, the apse with a three-sided end was added and the window frames, which still characterize the exterior today, were made of brick.
