A real crossroads for hikers, the Valmsaque drop (2549m) gives a superb view of the Basto lake on one side and the Mont Bégo area on the other. The main trail is the GR52 which crosses the Vallée des Merveilles passing through the rock engravings of the Mont Bégo region. Continuing your way on the GR52, you will be able to see a number of prehistoric engravings, such as the Christ of Petroglyph. If you want to discover the entire area of the engravings, you will however need to take a guide, because it is forbidden to venture off the marked trails, in order to protect and preserve the engravings as well as possible.

This hiking route runs through the Vallée des Merveilles, in the heart of the Mercantour National Park.
A little further south of Lake Basto, hikers pass through Valmasque Bay (2,459 m) before descending into the valley of wonders, a chaotic mineral landscape. Here you will find archaeological treasures such as rock carvings, most of which date back to around 3,300 BC.
