The area around Knockfierna was impacted significantly by the Great Famine and hiking trails provide a humbling glimpse into the history. It was once one of the most populated places locally but a huge number of people died from starvation. A memorial wall was unveiled in 2019 with the names of those who died inscribed in it. On top of the wall is a famine soup pot. As you hike you'll see the ruins of houses which were once home to over 600 people.
